I've really enjoyed my first year at COIL. This has been
one of the best school years I've ever had. I've homeschooled
all my life and have never seen this much of a variety
of classes or material. All the classes I took were helpful
and were taught in a way I could understand. I was part
of the Spanish class, and even though it was hard and
a lot of people didn't stick with it, I learned a lot
more than I would have in a regular Spanish curriculum
I've tried.
The writing classes were also very helpful. They gave
me a lot of good techniques to use in my regular writing
and my writing has improved greatly. It has been a great
year for me and I am looking forward to doing it again
next year.

Coming to C.O.I.L. was a big change for me. All my life, I've been going to a Public school and then my parents decide they want me to be home schooled. I've never thought of myself being home schooled. I thought that I would go over to someone's house and they would just teach me whatever. I was thinking to myself, “What if I go back to Public School and I'm behind in class?” But I thought wrong. Home schooling was ok. I just need to get used to it. The idea of me dividing my homework and my time was weird, but then it got easier.
The most important thing that I liked about home schooling is that you get to learn at your own pace, at your own level. For instance: I was having a hard time studying out of my history book, so my teacher, Mrs. Ramos, showed me another way to study and learn History. She gave me videos to watch, and books to read that helped me learn the subject. In the beginning of the year I hated history, but by the end of the year, I kind of enjoyed it. I got great help and I learned more than what I would of learned if I went to Public School. Being home schooled, especially at C.O.I.L. helped me depend on myself more and be more responsible. I've learned that I'm capable of learning on my own, and that's a good thing. The teachers are great and they help us a lot. They try to find fun ways for the students to do and understand the work. I look forward to coming to C.O.I.L. next year. I would recommend that students who haven't been home schooled before and are thinking about trying it to come to C.O.I.L.

COIL is a great place to help students flourish. At COIL, you receive the chance to draw out your talents. If you are more into art, you can do more art type projects for your academics. Prefer writing? Perhaps you can do more writing oriented projects. That is one of the great things about COIL. They can help gear academics towards your strengths and help you to flourish in these strengths.
COIL is different than any school I have ever been to. COIL is more one-on-one and you have to meet with your advisor one-on-one. At a public school, the ratio is about thirty to one. There is no individualized lesson plans or help time. Most teachers at school don't have the time to stay after school for help and some students aren't very comfortable with meeting with their teacher after school anyways. COIL also lacks the high school drama that runs rampant through school. Sure there are always people who don't like other people and there are always going to be little disagreements here and there but it is nothing like high school. COIL is defiantly not a “drama magnet school.” At COIL, you are free to be you. You can work on your schoolwork at your own pace and not have to feel the pressure of getting your work done in class. That brings up what I really love about COIL there isn't any homework. Well, it depends on how you look at it. All schoolwork is homework but while your friends can't hang out till they finish their homework, you are already done.
During my years at COIL, I have become much more independent, self reliant, and I have gained a lot of self-confidence. My independence has grown tremendously. If you compared the me of three years ago to the me now, it would be night and day. You may look at me and not see it and say that I am still really shy and I am timid. I am nowhere near where I was three years ago.

My first year in home schooling, I found was interesting and a little tough because it was something new for me and also it wasn't as I had expected it to be. I had the impression in my mind that having flexibility would make it easy for me. But with all my other activities added in and trying to structure myself was the toughest challenge. There are many events this year that helped me in many places, my academic growth has been quiet impressive and I have also had some extra time to get to know myself better than before, also I was able to confront myself about habits of mine that I particularly liked and ones I didn't like.
In academic growth I have realized that I have become sharper and somewhat wiser, I have also realized that I do not need to depend upon a teacher for every subject that I need to study. I have become more independent and have learned that I need to work hard or strive in case I wish to accomplish anything. As for myself, I have learned many things about myself that I did not know before, such as the fact that I am no longer shy about things and do not care so much about other people's opinions about me. I have also realized that if there is any subject that I try hard in, I usually end up accomplishing a great amount of insight into it. From this I also realized that when I was taking the “Poetry Pros” I had a lot of fun. Sometimes the class was quiet amusing and sometimes not. I would say that this was most probably my most favorite class that I joined up for and it was rather amusing because on the first day of the class I didn't say much …but then for the rest of the days I couldn't stop talking or giving my answers or opinions about everything.

I first have to say thank you to my COIL teacher Gino. He has really helped me to get through this year. Even if I don't know some stuff, he doesn't get mad at me. He just smiles and tries to explain what I don't know. He just finds another way to help me learn the lessons. He is very patient, yet gives me a little push sometimes.
It wasn't that I didn't like Irvington, it was just that I had a lot of things happening in my family that made school hard to concentrate on. It was really hard to get up in the morning and if I got to school and I was frustrated, I just wanted to leave.
With coil, I work at my own pace. My mom leaves me a note with stuff to work on that day. If I can't do it, she helps me, or if I just don't feel like working I know I have to catch up later. We work together on things I don't understand. She doesn't get mad at me; we just try and learn it together. If I don't understand she calls Gino and explains why we didn't do the whole chapter. He always understands and asks me to try and learn as much as I can, before I get frustrated.
I think coil has been good for me.We did a report on the “Outsiders”, I was surprised I got a good grade. Gino really made me feel good about myself, & that report. Sometimes I'm really frustrated, I try, but I don't get some things. At least Gino & my Mom don't make me feel worse.
I am thankful I got a great teacher like Gino and someone to help me like mom.

In this past year at C.O.I.L, I have grown both academically, and emotionally. C.O.I.L has let me grow and learn at my own pace which no other school let me do before. They taught me in the style that I learn best in, through visual aspects. This method of teaching has taught me more than any one or any thing has ever. Thank you C.O.I.L and Gino for finally finding what children really need to learn, you have definitely helped me and I think I will achieve a lot more out of life because of it.
I think I have finally flourished. I have much higher expectations for myself now, and I think that in life I will not settle but always strive to be better. My parents always told me I was going to go to college no matter what. It was something I was going to do, but not necessarily wanted to do. Now I do, you have made learning fun and I cannot seem to get enough.
This conquest of good grades has helped me tremendously emotionally. As a young child, I was the one in the back row of the classroom struggling to read. I was so embarrassed and thought little of my self because of it. Now that I am learning and get great grades I no longer want to hide in the back row. I want to be right up front where the action is. I also am not afraid to raise my hand and participate or get up in front of the class and present a project. I am no longer afraid of making mistakes, because even if I give the wrong answer I will learn from it, and not sink in to my chair from embarrassment.
This newfound confidence has helped me in my every day life as well. I just recently got a great job that I am proud to say I got on all on my own, by impressing my interviewer with my confidence and articulacy. Although I cannot take all the credit for this, because not only my math teacher this year but my life long teacher my mother helped me understand the interviewing process. Not only that, but yesterday I was able to sit with my human recourses and fill out my W4, direct deposit form, and workers compensation. Thanks to my mother I know what these indicate and I can sit with confidence and fill them out. I now have the confidence and knowledge to endeavor in life and be all I can be which is much more than I ever thought possible before this growth transformation and life changing experience.
In addition, I still have one more year at C.O.I.L to retain even more knowledge. I plan to take all I can. In my life, now the sky is the limit I no longer have boundaries holding me back from achieving my goals.

This year I have learned many things at COIL and have benefited from taking a number of classes there, including physics labs and a utopia course.
I started out my tenth grade year with a trip to Austria, where I visited some historical sites. I saw an old castle that was bombed during one of the World Wars, as well as another one that is almost a thousand years old and is still standing. The St. Wolfgang church, which is also very old, was another stop on my trip. It was a trip well worth taking.
This year I took the core courses Algebra II, English 10, geography, and physics to continue fulfilling the graduation requirements. From Algebra II, I learned many new things, including trigonometry. Doing the algebra problems really taught me to think logically and to see that most of the time, there is more than one way to solve a problem. In my English course, there were many good books to choose from to read and think about. I also joined a Utopia class at COIL so I had the opportunity to discuss the literature with other people my age. Most high school students only take three years of history, but I added geography to my list. Taking geography allowed me to learn about places all over the world, which is something most high school students don't study. Places like Australia, Africa, and Asia aren't taught much in the required high school history classes. I enjoyed my physics labs, which were at COIL, even though they were somewhat challenging. The physics lab and the utopia class gave me the chance to make friends with other homeschooled kids, something many other homeschool students miss. Many things can be learned from these classes beyond what the textbooks teach.
I also had the opportunity to take as many electives as I wanted, so I chose piano, Cantonese, and German. I began the year with a new piano teacher and entered a competition in which I won first place. I have also begun to put my years of practice into use by playing piano for my church's English service. My Cantonese and German classes allow me to communicate with my relatives, such as my grandparents, who speak Cantonese, and my cousins in Austria, who speak German. As you can see, I chose electives that will help me in my everyday life.
COIL has helped me prepare for the future. I really enjoy the wide range of classes I can take which aren't available at most schools. Having this wide selection to choose from also teaches me to choose classes wisely. COIL has given me what most public schools cannot.

I have grown in many different ways this year at C.O.I.L. I have grown in skills, knowledge, and working habits. C.O.I.L. has taught me many things.
My skills have greatly increased this year. I am now able to write longer papers in less time. I am also able to do lengthy math problem in my head and still get them right. My strong vocabulary usage has gone up too. I am also able to play harder piano pieces. Some of my skills have largely increased.
My knowledge of terms and words has multiplied this year too. This year in history I learned about ancient civilizations. One of the subjects was the Native Americans, so we went to a Pow Wow. The Coriolis effect is just one of the many thing I have learned. The distinction between hurricanes, tornados, typhoon, and cyclones is just another thing I was taught. A field trip to our state capital helped me learn more about California. Remembering knowledge is a thing I'm good at.
The habits I have when working have altered. First, I take reduced breaks and finish my work quicker. I also keep my table spotless so I can work better. I'm also able to concentrate better on my work. These are a few ways my habits have changed.
Everyday I improve due to school. Like many say school prepares you for life. I have grown a lot at C.O.I.L.

There is a proverb that states “you learn something new everyday”, for some days this proves to be true while other days this isn't so evident. Yet, regardless of everyday, I can in all honesty say that year after year I learn something new, not only in a book sense but also about myself. It seems as though when each school year comes to an end, I can look back and list a variety of ways I have changed for the good and bad.
This past school year was no different than the last eleven. Over the course of the ten months I have gotten to know more and more about myself in many different aspects. Though at times it seemed interminable I learned to just keep going regardless of how long or short it took. I guess this is one of the first and most important things I learned about myself. I learned to have the attitude of not giving up regardless of how hard life and school may be at the moment. This is only one of many hidden traits I learned about myself this year; others include a variety of positive and negative things that I have uncovered in my attitudes and actions.
In retrospect I see the difficult moments I had to pull late nights of studying for both college and high school and now that I look back I see it was all well worth it. Probably one of the greatest schooling I have been taught about myself can be seen in these late nights. I now realize that if I fully apply myself to too difficult, yet not impossible tasks I can do them. It seems as though time after time of hanging out with friends I would have to go home and stay up late to get the work that was due, completed. However, regardless of the deadlines I always seemed to manage to have fun with friends, while still accomplishing my work. I found out that if I applied myself to college and high school I can achieve both with great success.

When I first enrolled in COIL, I was a sixth grader in a fifth grade math book. I completed the fifth grade book and I am half way through the sixth grade book. Next year I plan on finishing my sixth grade book and catching up with the seventh graders.
I expected it to be easier than public school and I also expected to spend less time on schoolwork and homework. It turns out we worked harder and accomplished much more than we did in public school. And we also did not have to do homework after class time. I feel a lot less stress in home schooling than I did in public school.
What I appreciate most is that we decided how much time we needed on each subject. Some subjects I needed more time then public school allowed. Other subjects I needed less time than public school required.
It is especially great to be away from disruptive and violent students in the classroom and on the playground. I feel safe at home.

I am a thirteen-year-old boy and a student of COIL. This was my first year at COIL. COIL was a lot different from my regular school. In this past year I didn't get out as much as I used to, but I felt that I learned a lot more than I did in public school. I think that being home-schooled is better than going to the public schools because you can learn a lot more in the home-schooling programs. That is the main point for every school in the world; to learn.
I learned many things this year that I feel I wouldn't have learned in public school. In COIL I got to use books from the upper grades because I felt that I could do those rather than the books of my grade level. That is probably the best thing about COIL. You can use learn much faster and get faster education because there are so many options in the home-schooling places. So, when I got my books I also felt that I was learning more than the public school kids when I sort of compared my knowledge with them. In public schools you don't learn as much as you should because of the environment. The reason I like home schooling better is because I like to learn.
In home schooling I would say that math was my most difficult subject. Since I was doing a book ahead of my grade it was a bit difficult in the beginning of the year. As the year passed on, it then became a lot easier to do math. Now math is not a problem for me because I understand it. Out of all my other subjects Life Science was most easy for me. It wasn't hard at all, and I actually wanted to do it because it was very interesting. I also got very good grades on it which made me like it even more. The rest of my subjects weren't too hard, but they weren't easy either.
When I first came to COIL I was nervous because I had never been home-schooled so I didn't know what to expect. Then later on I sort of missed public school because of my friends, but I was happy at COIL too. Now I really like COIL and I hope I can come back next year.

I came to coil in 7th grade. When I first came I hated school. I had terrible grades and I felt like I could never succeed. When I was in Cesar Chavez school I got a lot of papers back and they had f's on them and no one ever told me why I missed so many or how to fix it. Now I have time to learn. When I get something wrong I have a chance to fix it after I have learned more about the subject. Come to think of it, in the past 2 years since I have been at COIL I don't think that I gotten one F, or D I don't even think that I have gotten a C. It feels really good to say that.
When I was in Cesar Chavez I was on the verge of failing history. When I came to COIL I learned that history is my favorite subject and the subject that I am doing the best in.
I feel that it is great that I can come to school and be quizzed orally, one on one. Instead of being graded on my spelling and penmanship I am graded on what I have really learned.
I have realized that in order to succeed in an independent study atmosphere you have to be very organized not only with papers and homework but you also have to use you time wisely. This has been a very hard challenge for me for but I feel that I have done very well. I have learned to be more organized and have learned to use my time wisely. I am hoping this will help me as I am starting high schoolmnext year.
I am looking forward to starting high school next year. Even though I am not changing schools it will be nice to say that I am in high school. It kind of makes me nervous thinking about credits and that I have to get so many each year or I don't graduate. I would like the option to graduate early but I don't know for sure if I would want to do that or if I am capable of that.
I also learned this year that I am dyslexic. After finding out for sure I realized that all those years I got terrible grades wasn't because I was dumb. I also learned that a lot of my weaknesses in other areas are due to dyslexia. I am happy that we figured out that I am dyslexic before I started high school. Now I will get the help that I need and I will be able to succeed and graduate and maybe even go to college.

I think I've really grown while at COIL this year. I have learned a lot in all my years of schooling but I've learned the most about myself in this past year. I have also grown academically, I have learned things that I never thought I would be able to even comprehend. I think that COIL has definitely helped me to become the person that I am now.
I first joined COIL in the 7th grade, I was very young and kind of apprehensive about joining a home school program. I tried it for 1 year and I liked it, I kept telling myself as soon as I got board with it I could just go back to public school. I'm still at COIL, having just completed my last year of high school, I guess I never got bored. Now leaving COIL I'm no longer apprehensive and would even recommend home schooling.
I have grown academically also. I began the year as in 11 th grader and am graduating at the end year as a 12 th grader. I never thought I would be able to complete 2 years of schooling in 1 year. All the credits and the tests and just plain hard work that was required to complete this goal was overwhelming. Plus I had 2.5 credits in algebra that I had failed to complete in my 9 th grade year that I had to complete this year. Algebra was and still is my own personal hell, and I was not too excited about having to complete that. In the end I did it and have the best feeling of victory.
My teacher was a big part this year too. At the beginning of the year I hated him, we fought about everything! I thought he was mean and pushing me too hard, and I think he thought I was hateful and spoiled. When I finally thought I had hit my breaking point, he'd pile tons more work on me and show me I could take more. I hated it at the time but I am thankful now. We learned a lot about each other and I now appreciate his way of teaching.
I've grown a lot personally too. There were a lot of times this year that I wanted so bad to just give up. Yet everyone kept reminding me that it would soon be all over and be forever worth it. I'm so thankful for all the people that kept me motivated and on track. At times thought I could take no more but I worked through it, something I thought I could never do. I learned a lot about my self this year and it was all because of COIL.

In the beginning of the school year, my family decided I would attend COIL. I really didn't know what to expect when I started. To my surprise its been an awesome experience for me. When I first started attending COIL, it was very different for me, because you have to meet with your teacher twice a month for an hour, you have to return your homework your teacher assigns to you, and you have to meet with your teacher face to face. I thought that was kinda of scary at first, but I think you learn more that way. Because your teacher knows what your weakness' are in your school, and she or he helps you with it. My teacher at COIL is, Mary-Jo Ip, she is very kind, and she is really awesome to talk to. In the beginning of the school year, I was having a lot of difficulties with my writing skills, like an essay or a poem, but she really helped me a lot. I think I am a little better than how I was before. She also taught me history, and some literature.
Also, one of my favorite field trips was the Marina Berkeley boat trip. The people that worked there were very nice. When we got on the boat it was awesome. We caught a few fish on the net that they had threw out, so we can see what kind of fish we can catch. One type of fish we was a jelly fish. The people that worked there said it was very rare that they get jelly fish, so we were very lucky. We also caught a pregnant shiner fish. They said it was due any time. I think it was just fun being on the boat. I am really interested in learning more about the sea life. I really enjoy learning about the different types of fish. I think if COIL would ever have another field trip like the Marina Berkeley field trip, I would go again.
Last of all, it's been a nice experience meeting new people. The activities that COIL had offered, such as, bowling, skiing, science, art, and literature had been very fun. COIL has been an awesome experience this past school year.

When I first started COIL in September 03 I really didn't know what to expect. I came from a school where I was lost in the crowd. I would go to class and it would be hard for me to understand the subject being taught. I have a learning difference that made it hard for me to keep up with my studies. It was very frustrating, to go
to school every day unprepared for the next lesson being taught, when I didn't have the understanding from the previous day's lesson.
My ninth grade resource teacher suggested that I try COIL as an option for my education. COIL has given me a new chance to understand the material I would need to learn for the future. For the first time in my life, I feel successful. Instead of getting Ds and Fs, I mostly get As and Bs, and sometimes Cs. I find it so much easier to work at my pace, and get my assignments done.
Mrs. Ip has helped me put together an educational plan that I can accomplish. If there is a subject I am interested in, Mrs. Ip is open to allowing me to include it to my educational plan. Mrs. Ip gives me enough variety work to make learning interesting. I am given all the supplies I need to work. My experience with Mrs. Ip is a positive one.
I look forward to working next year with Mrs. Ip. In my educational plan next year, I would like art to be included. I would not change a thing about my educational plan. I know how important my education is, and I plan on doing the best I can in the years to come. I know I will be successful next year.
In conclusion my over all experience with COIL was a good one. My parents and I are satisfied with the progress I have made this year. I am pleased with the amount of work, and time that is given to complete it. I know that I am ready to move on to the next lessons in high school. I look forward to another successful year at COIL.

Well one thing's for sure. Never in my lifetime, will I ever forget my year as an 8th grader. Even with all the excitement I've had in gymnastics, traveling, competing, etc. The good and bad events of this year have topped it all.
This year began great. I was going to go to Hopkins Jr. High for a science class. I got the period I wanted. Fourth, right before lunch so that if I wanted to I could stay after class and hangout with my friends. After a little while, everything was going “oh so great”, and curveball number one was thrown right at my elbow. Turned out I had an elbow chip about 1-2cm long that had to be taken out. I'd never had surgery before, I was planning on never having stitches, and I was hoping I'd never have to take vicatin! When I heard that I needed surgery, stitches, and was going to need to take vicatin, it was a huge disappointment. I thought “oh great” just my luck another injury that's going to take more time out of my training. That disappointment soon turned into what I called a miracle. It couldn't have been more than 2 or 3 weeks before I was back to doing my skills and my elbow had never felt better! I was convinced it was going to be an awesome year.
It's true, for a couple weeks it was amazing. Amazing until curveball number two was thrown at my back. After the past 2 years it's not unlikely for me to be injured. It's happened plenty of times. Believe me! But when I began to get a terrible pain in my lower back, once again I thought, “Not again!” “Why is this happening to me?” Turned out I had a disc bulge, and needed to go to physical therapy for a little while doing pool therapy in addition to the regular exercises. Even though the healing process seemed to be going slow, it wasn't too bad. I thought okay, I'll just take my time and make sure this heals right. It will all turn out okay in the end.
Well in the midst of the healing of my back, a giant tornado hit and turned my world upside down. Except instead of this being a good thing, it caused chaos, pain, and all kinds of emotions. Just like a tornado hitting, this is the type of thing you hear about, but hope, pray, and think would never happen to you. Out of about 10 girls and about 10 years, I was the first one to report being molested by the head coach and owner of my former gym Cal West. Some tornado huh? Luckily going through the legal process is new to me as well as everyone in my family. As a matter of fact, it is a new experience for all of the families involved. It isn't over yet, but it surely is stressful. Everyone seems to get the impression that I'm a bubbly, happy, positive person, and I usually am. But with everything I've been through in this process including talking to detectives, attorneys, and even a therapist, this year I'm sure people got a different impression. I feel as though I've grown as a person, having to act beyond my years, encouraging people to come forward, and getting over what happened to me. Even though, it isn't over yet, I know it will all be good again in the end. I have already found a new gym, made new friends, and have the best coaches in the WORLD!!
As you can see from what I've just told you, I've played some baseball this year. Yes, those balls were thrown at me, but I hit them back every single time. My elbow did heal and I haven't had any problems since, my back did get better and is still feeling great, I am going through this terrible legal process right now, but I did find a much better gym! In all this I've grown so much. I know that with the help of my friends and family, I can survive through anything. I can make any negative a positive. I can hit every curveball thrown at me. I can survive any storm. So you see, in the end, I win.

being able to go at my own pace is the best way to learn.
There were a couple things in math that I did not understand.
After trying several ways of explaining them, my parents
decided I was just not ready to learn those things. We
did other things in math. A few weeks later, we went
back to those things and I understood them right away.
If I were in a regular classroom with other students,
I would have had to follow what they were doing. I would
have had to be more frustrated. Since I could go at my

There are many things I like about Antelope View, but
especially two aspects are most important to me. First,
the small size has allowed the teachers to pay much more

Excelsior Education Center has been a great thing that
has happened to me. This school has taught me to be a
better leader. It has given me more opportunities to
excel at what I do best. Also, it has taught me to be
on time and has really got me much more organized than
I used to be. Excelsior has been a great motivation for
me to do well in school. I am glad I transferred schools
to come to a place where dreams truly come true.

Excelsior has shown me that anything is possible when
you set your mind to doing it, and your family and teacher
(Sue White) have faith in you.
I’ve come a long way, and actually learned to
do things I never thought I could. I’m so grateful
Excelsior and Sue were there for me, now all I have to
do is to decide which way I want to go in my career.

Home schooling has always seemed fun to me. The home
school group that I was with didn’t help me enough
and I didn’t feel like I was doing enough work.
Excelsior has made it a lot more clear about what I need
to do. I feel like I’m really learning stuff. The
books are very good at teaching me what I need to know
for each subject.

I am now 18 years old. I started
going to Excelsior in 2000. I needed a school that was
going to be willing to teach me 1-on-1. I then heard
about Excelsior, so I went home and I told my parents
about it. My mom then decided to enroll me. It was the
best choice that my mom had ever made. I am now an alumni
of Excelsior. It was a real challenge. I had to discipline
myself to do my work without having a teacher breathing
down my neck, pressuring me to get it done or else....I
was then introduced to Leti Guteriez. She was a really
great facilitator. She was always concerned that I was
doing my work and if I had a problem that I couldn't
solve myself, she would be there to help me.
Unlike regular public school where there were too many
kids for just 1-on-1 help, Excelsior teaches you that
is it okay not to have an answer to everything and that
the teachers are always there to help no matter what
question you have. It then was my junior year and I was
introduced to Ronnie Henderson. He was a new facilitator
at Excelsior. He was also the journalism teacher. I then
got signed up for journalism and that's when I had also
enrolled in yearbook. Ronnie was a really awesome teacher.
He always kept on me especially when I would get discouraged.
He always told me that he knew I had it in me to succeed.
Then I became a BIG BAD Senior. I WAS THE BUSINESS MANAGER
OF JOURNALISM. I kept my grades up and I really thank
RONNIE HENDERSON for believing in me. I wouldn't be where
I am now. Now I am living in Arizona and I am attending
ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY studying to be a forensic Pathologist.
All it takes is for you to believe in yourself....

I like Excelsior because at home in my own environment
where I am comfortable, there are no distractions so
I can work faster. Excelsior is better than traditional
school because I can work at my own pace and not follow
a slow school schedule that would slow me down.

The person who I think has helped me improve my life,
is my teacher at Excelsior Education Center. Her name
is Marie. Marie is a good teacher she is also a good
person. Marie has taken the time and patience to help
me with my reading skills. She has shown me how to have
confidence in myself and to take the time to figure things
out. Marie has made reading fun for me with her help.
Where before it was hard and frustrating, Marie has helped
me with reading out loud and to not be afraid to read
out loud. I enjoy reading out loud now and it is more
fun than before. I even raise my hand now, because I’m
excited about being able to read to everyone. I think
pretty much everyone in my class feels the same about
our teacher. She is funny at times and that also makes
us want to learn more. I know I have improved a lot since
having Marie as my teacher. She enjoys her students and
cares about them. I think anyone who ends up having Marie
as a teacher is a lucky student. I know between her help
and wanting to learn, that this has done a lot for me.
I enjoy being in Marie’s class and hope I will
be there for awhile, because from Marie, I can and have
learned alot.

The reason why I like coming to EEC is because I feel
that it really helps me better than at public school,
because I do not have the distractions of all the students
and other things. When I came to Excelsior I felt safe.
I think that the field trips are really helpful and educational
for us, and that I can do all of my school work at home
and in some peace of mind.

also learned a lot of things at Excelsior. The teachers
are really good with helping the students. They also
have a good sports program. They have basketball; that
is one of the sports I joined. It was really fun and
exciting. I also joined the football team. I think that
was a very good program, too.

EEC's Personalized Learning program has given me a chance
to be able to graduate and get a high school diploma.
Excelsior did not care that I’m 41 years old, they
gave a second chance. You work one on one with the facilitator,
that’s something you don’t have in a traditional
school. Excelsior, I want to thank you for all your help.

I like Excelsior because it allows you to finish your
work in however long you want to finish high school.
If you want to finish a year early you can work fast,
if you want to take your time, you can. I also really
like the staff they are very helpful and friendly. What
makes Excelsior better is that they have nice helpful
tutors to help if you need it. I needed help with my
math work and I had Jeremy Kermott to help me and he
explained it really well.
