The school's vision statement,
Success through Academic Excellence
, mirrors the school's goal to combine effective school
elements in a program which empowers students to meet
California 's rigorous academic standards. Administration,
teachers, parents, students, and community partners
were instrumental in defining the school's mission
statement as follows:
The Mission of Stellar Secondary Charter High School
is to prepare students in grades nine through twelve
for the future by providing knowledge and skills
to achieve academic excellence, personal growth,
success and responsibility as a productive member
of the community.
Stellar Secondary Charter High
School will support and empower parents who have
elected to educate their children in the home with
a myriad of community, educational, and technological
resources and experiences, and will build and foster
a community of learners which views education as
not confined to the traditional four walls of a classroom,
but rather as a free-flowing exchange of ideas and
knowledge based on the needs of each and every individual
child.
As the vision and mission of the school were developed,
comprehensive school development models were also researched
by parents, teachers, and administrators, particularly
the
Coalition of Essential Schools
model. This is a Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration
project which proves with three plus years of data
that it improves student achievement.
This model emphasizes
the learner acquiring a solid foundation of basic skills
and using those skills to set personal learning goals,
focuses on in-depth investigations, and engages in
wider world authentic projects, fieldwork, and service.
It also emphasizes professional development, careful
monitoring of student success indicators, and an individualized
approach to learning that requires large, flexible
blocks of time for students.
This model lends itself
well to the use of technology for skill development
projects and research, and focusing on teachers as
facilitators of learning and monitors of progress.
It is also compatible with our strong focus on achieving
state content standards and assessment measures based
on those standards.
This personalized learning model provides
the foundation of our school program. Research-based
data and our own tracking records of success with our
students make available a powerful model to improve
academic performance in our high school classes, including
all sub-groups of learners.
Broad, overall program goals for students of Stellar
Secondary Charter High School include mastery of California
content standards in English/language arts, math, science,
history/social science, physical education, health, and
visual and performing arts for successful entry into
college; the capacity to use technology for learning
and problem-solving; the ability to make good decisions
regarding personal behavior; self-motivated learning
that will extend through high school, college, and a
productive adulthood
