APLUS+ is the Association
of Personalized Learning Schools & Services. APLUS+
is a new association dedicated to promoting
the Personalized Learning model of education—a
unique approach in public education that has
evolved through the public charter school movement
in California. Personalized Learning is a distinct
educational model designed to meet the more
diverse needs of the 21st Century K-12 student
who seeks or requires a more flexible, tailored,
and individualized approach to learning. Personalized
learning programs have helped tens of thousands
of students in California rediscover hope and
purpose in public education through this more
individualized approach.
APLUS+ provides a wide variety of community relations, information, networking,
and promotional services to schools and other organizations that embrace
a Personalized Learning approach to education. APLUS+ was founded
by Jeff Rice, who has served as a leading advocate in the California
charter school community for the past three years. Rice has worked diligently
to help establish the Personalized Learning movement in California, drawing
from a professional background that includes an MBA and more than 20

The Personalized Learning movement began as a strategic and proactive
response to the numerous, long-standing challenges facing the misperceived “non-classroom” charter
school program. These public and legislative misperceptions have resulted
in a series of restrictive legislative action toward these programs that
now threaten their future existence in public education. Many of these
misperceptions and responses resulted from misunderstandings and misperceptions
as to how these programs administer learning and account for learning
progress and results. The term Personalized Learning was created to more
accurately define and describe this unique approach to education, and
distinguish this approach from others that have been inaccurately associated
with this model of education. In the past, Personalized Learning programs
have been described using terms such as non-classroom, homeschooling,
Independent Study, distance learning, non-site, and others. While Personalized
Learning programs do incorporate as components of learning both
classroom and non-classroom learning environments, technology learning,
home study support, community-based learning, and Independent Study options,
none of these terms in and of themselves accurately describe the foundation
of their educational approach, that foundation being that learning is "personalized" according
to the needs of each individual student.
It is the goal of APLUS+ to help foster improved community awareness,
understanding and support of the Personalized Learning model in
public education and the network of Personalized Learning programs
in California.
To advance
Personalized Learning as a unique and
distinct model of education;
To be
a networking vehicle for uniting programs that
are dedicated to a Personalized Learning model
of education;
To serve
as a positive and united voice to advocate,
support, and promote the growing benefits and
successes of the Personalized Learnin model
of education.
APLUS+ is dedicated to promoting the benefits and successes of the Personalized
Learning model as well as promoting schools, education resource
companies and other organizations who are successfully implementing or
supporting a Personalized Learning approach. APLUS+ works with
media, local and statewide public officials, education groups, business
groups, and the general public to build positive awareness, understanding,
and support for the Personalized Learning model.
APLUS+ offers a variety of promotional services to clients who utilize
a Personalized Learning approach to education, including development
and placement of web site profiles and links, success stories, press
releases, testimonials, newsletter articles, and other informational
tools. APLUS+ also makes personal appearances on behalf of its clients
for a variety of public speaking opportunities.
APLUS+ spearheads regional and statewide meetings for clients to share
important concerns about critical issues facing their programs, as well
to as share best practices and successes that will improve their position
in education and their ability to better serve their students. APLUS+
also serves as a liaison with other important educational groups and
movements that can help reinforce the value and importance of choice
and alternative models in public education.
APLUS+ provides ongoing information to its clients regarding important
developments and trends that may influence its client's programs, and
facilitates opportunities for discussion, review, and interpretation
of these developments.
