Dan & Angie Sinclair are the regional representatives for the Math-U-See curriculum. They became the representatives 7 years ago and have grown their company right along with the charter school movement in California. They are home educators of three children and have a desire to help other understand math. We are here to help you and your parents. If you would like to have an inservice training for your facilitators and/or parents please give us a call!
The Math-U-See system was developed by Steve Demme. While teaching math he saw the benefit of systematic review of an extended period of time. Many people refer to this method as a spiraling approach. Additionally, Steve worked with manipulative materials and observed the link between "seeing" the computation and concepts demonstrated concretely with the "understanding" of math. Combining the strengths of systematic review with hands-on manipulatives, Steve developed a complete math program that utilizes unique interlocking, colorful blocks and fraction overlays to teach math, along with videos, teacher manuals, student texts and test booklets to provide the review and reinforcement.
The Math-U-See curriculum is unique in that it provides a balanced approach to mathematical instruction by simultaneously emphasizing computation skills and conceptual understanding. The curriculum's emphasis for the student is mastery, not only of the computation, but the concept and application. It is important for a student to know "how" to divide; understanding "when" to divide is essential. Throughout the videos and curriculum these words are emphasized; BUILD, WRITE and SAY.
Students building with manipulatives incorporate the visual, kinesthetic, figurative and tactile; writing teaches the symbolism of math and bridges the concrete and the abstract; saying taps into the auditory and semantic. This multi-sensory approach allows students to see the numbers on paper (abstract), to visualize the concept.
The video instruction is in lesson-by-lesson format to teach the teacher the Math-U-See methodology and philosophy. They are designed, along with the teacher manual, to provide explanation for each new concept and several examples illustrating the use of the manipulatives. Once the teacher has learned the material needed to teach, then the teacher demonstrates to the student. Using the student text the student practices the material taught in the lesson, until mastery (the ability to teach back what has been learned) is demonstrated. Then the student moves into the systematic review sheets and continues to practice the material learned in prior lessons. This sequential lesson plan with systematic review moves the student forward, while practicing what has been learned.
In 2004, Math-U-See released it's new Greek levels for the Elementary levels. This new curricula is in a yearly format with DVD's, Teachers Manuals, Student Texts and Test Booklets. There are now over 330 lessons on video!
First Place in the 2003 Practical HomeSchooling Awards for High School Math Curriculum in Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Trigonometry.
Our Classic material received Second Place in the Elementary Math Curriculum catagory.
(Note: in 2004 the new "GREEK" levels of Math-U-See were released for the Elementary levels).
