This system is designed to build relational understanding between the students and the letters. Many of us were taught that vowels are either LONG or SHORT. The question is what is LONG or SHORT about a vowel? NOTHING! You don't say the sound longer or shorter, it is not larger in volume or size, so why are they called LONG or SHORT?
Actually it has much to do with what is called the Great Vowel Shift which happened back in the early 15th century. A vowel shift is a systematic change in the pronunciation of the vowel sounds of a language. It marked the turning point between Middle English and Modern English. The problem with that is in today's Modern English is doesn't help!
Students learning today's Modern English are told that vowels are LONG or SHORT with no way to explain why. Joyce realized this with her students and developed a way for students to relate at a personal level with the letters.
